Describing the services of western businesses in developing countries as mere ‘charity’ is inappropriate, says Gemma Crijns, former coordinator of the Dutch MVO-Platform, a network of 33 Dutch civil society organisations and trade unions which works to promote corporate social responsibility (CSR). Crijns, who has been working with Amnesty International and the Nyenrode Business University for many years, sees different starting points in the CSR-debate. “Northern NGOs prefer a legal approach to CSR: they want companies to comply with international rules concerning labour rights, environmental issues, child labour, et cetera. Southern NGOs focus on what companies do in practice to alleviate poverty, like building schools or connecting rural communities to solar electricity. They have to, because most southern governments are not capable of delivering these goods and services.”
This difference in approach emerged in May this year, when the MVO-Platform organised a CSR-week with some 27 civil society representatives, most of whom were experts from NGOs and trade unions based in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. They had come to The Netherlands in order to discuss their experiences with CSR, and how the mainly ‘Northern’ concepts influence the daily life of people in developing countries. |
